Cheap doesn't have to mean basic
The best cheap vacations don't feel cheap. They're places where a comfortable hotel, excellent food and a private guide cost a fraction of what they would at home, and where you can afford to say yes to the extras.
To make this list honest, we set a clear rule: a week of mid-range travel for one person, meaning a good hotel room (shared with a partner), three meals a day, local transport and some activities, must come in under $1,000 before flights. We used Budget Your Trip's averages of what real travelers report spending, then checked them against 2026 hotel prices and cost-of-travel surveys.
Several of these places aren't just cheap. They're also some of the highest-rated destinations in the world. In Travel + Leisure's 2026 World's Best Awards, readers ranked Chiang Mai, Hoi An and Oaxaca among the top five cities on earth, per the awards announcement.
Weekly figures are rounded from Budget Your Trip mid-range averages by country. Mexico's figure is half of the site's two-person estimate. Your costs will vary with season and travel style.
Asia and the Caucasus
1. Tbilisi and Kakheti wine country, Georgia
Georgia is one of the world's oldest wine regions, and its tradition of fermenting wine in clay jars called qvevri is UNESCO-listed. In Tbilisi, you can soak in the domed sulphur baths of the old town, then eat khachapuri (cheese bread) and drink natural wine for less than the price of a cocktail at home. Budget Your Trip's mid-range estimate is only about $39 a day. Tbilisi also ranked second on Tripadvisor's list of trending destinations for 2026, per Tripadvisor.
The splurge that's still cheap: a private driver for a day trip to the Kakheti vineyards or up the Georgian Military Road into the Caucasus.
2. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka packs beaches, rainforest, ancient cities and tea-covered hills into an island you can cross in a day. Many visitors hire a car and driver for the whole trip, which feels like luxury but is standard here. Mid-range travel averages about $56 a day. From May 25, 2026, tourists from 40 countries, including the US and UK, can get a free 30-day electronic travel authorization, according to Sri Lanka's official ETA site.
The splurge that's still cheap: a night in a colonial-era tea planter's bungalow in the hill country.
3. Hoi An and Da Nang, Vietnam
Hoi An had the lowest costs of any long-haul destination in the Post Office's 2025 survey, with a basket of typical tourist purchases costing £58.81, per its Long-Haul Report. A mid-range dinner for two in Da Nang costs about $20, according to Numbeo. Get a suit or dress made to measure by a Hoi An tailor, book a spa day, and spend the rest of the week between the lantern-lit old town and Da Nang's beaches. US travelers need a $25 e-visa. UK citizens get 45 days visa-free.
The splurge that's still cheap: five-star beach hotels. The 2026 Hotels.com Hotel Price Index put the average five-star night in nearby Nha Trang at about $119, per Expedia.
4. Chiang Mai and Krabi, Thailand
Thailand gives you two holidays in one: temples, night markets and cooking classes in Chiang Mai, then limestone islands and resort pools around Krabi. Chiang Mai was voted the third-best city in the world in Travel + Leisure's 2026 awards. Mid-range travel averages about $97 a day, but good hotels can cost much less than you'd expect, with five-star rooms in Phuket averaging about $144 a night in the 2026 Hotels.com index.
Watch out for: Thailand's international departure fee rose to 1,120 baht in June 2026, and visa-free stays were being shortened from 60 to 30 days. Check the latest rules.
5. Cappadocia and Istanbul, Türkiye
Sleeping in a cave hotel and watching hot-air balloons drift past at sunrise feels like a once-in-a-lifetime luxury, and in Cappadocia it's surprisingly affordable. Mid-range travel in Türkiye averages about $119 a day. The lira has lost most of its value against the dollar over the past five years, but high inflation means prices in dollars haven't fallen as much as the exchange rate suggests.
The splurge that's still cheap: a traditional hammam in Istanbul, and a Bosphorus ferry at sunset for the price of a coffee.
Europe, North Africa and the Americas
6. Kraków, Poland
Kraków's medieval main square is one of the largest in Europe, and the old town survived WWII largely intact. Stay in an apartment overlooking the old town, go to a classical concert in a church, and eat in restaurants that would cost twice as much in Vienna. Mid-range travel averages about $79 a day. Kayak reported that interest in Kraków more than doubled in its 2026 trends data, per Kayak, so book popular dates early.
7. The Albanian Riviera
Albania's southern coast has the turquoise water and pebble coves of the Greek islands just across the strait, at much lower prices. Mid-range travel averages about $84 a day, and Tirana was among the cheapest European cities in the Post Office's 2026 city-break survey. Flights from London start at around £75 to £235 return, according to Kayak UK.
Good to know: Albania isn't in the Schengen area, so days spent here don't count toward your 90-day Schengen limit.
8. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest does grand on a budget: thermal baths in palatial buildings, opera tickets for a fraction of London prices, and 19th-century cafés with gilded ceilings. Mid-range travel averages about $117 a day. Spend a morning at the Széchenyi or Gellért baths, and an evening in the "ruin bars" of the old Jewish Quarter.
9. Marrakech and Fes, Morocco
A riad, a traditional house built around a courtyard, often with a small pool, is one of the best-value luxury stays anywhere. Mid-range travel in Morocco averages about $89 a day, and flights from London start at about £89 to £236 return, per Kayak UK. Marrakech was seventh on Tripadvisor's 2026 list of the world's top destinations.
The splurge that's still cheap: a night in a desert camp near Merzouga, or a hammam and massage in the medina.
10. Cartagena and Medellín, Colombia
Cartagena's walled old town is full of boutique hotels in colonial mansions, many with rooftop plunge pools. Medellín has spring-like weather all year and an excellent food scene. Mid-range travel in Colombia averages about $67 a day, and flights from New York to Cartagena typically cost $455 to $708 return, per Kayak.
11. Antigua, Guatemala
Antigua's cobbled streets, pastel colonial buildings and ruined churches sit beneath three volcanoes. Stay in a converted colonial house, take a coffee farm tour, and add a few days at Lake Atitlán. Guatemala averages about $49 a day per person. Intrepid's seven-day Heart of Guatemala tour starts at about $999 if you'd rather have everything arranged.
12. Oaxaca and Mérida, Mexico
Oaxaca, ranked the fifth-best city in the world by Travel + Leisure readers in 2026, is Mexico's food capital, famous for its moles, mezcal and markets. Mérida, in the Yucatán, is the base for Maya ruins, cenotes and restored haciendas that now operate as hotels. A mid-range week in Mexico comes to roughly $765 per person. Flights from Chicago to Mexico City typically cost $326 to $536 return, per Kayak.

How to make a cheap trip feel luxurious
The feeling of luxury comes from a few moments, not from spending evenly every day. Spend where it shows and save everywhere else.
• Splurge on one or two nights. Book a mid-range hotel for most of the trip and one spectacular stay, such as a cave hotel, a riad with a pool or a five-star beach resort, for the finale.
• Pay for time-savers. A private driver in Sri Lanka or Georgia costs less than a rental car at home and removes the stress of navigating.
• Eat where locals eat for lunch. Save your restaurant budget for one or two memorable dinners.
• Book experiences, not things. A cooking class, a hammam or a sunrise balloon flight is what you'll remember, and they're priced for local economies.
• Travel just outside peak season. You'll get better rooms and more attention for the same money.
